METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it has not penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping the gum off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a gooey and sticky glob. Once that happens, we slide a putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. Next we move the scraper very slowly under the gum and the entire piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use very high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our team never uses any more pressure than necessary to safely clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be destroyed much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our professional chewing gum removal professional.
